№ 00 , The Ranking

The 25 safest suburbs in Florida.

A safe Florida suburb is not the one with the gate at the entrance; it is the one where the FBI numbers stay low across three years of reporting. The 25 towns below score highest on the everycity safety index for May 2026, ranked on violent and property crime per 1,000 residents from the latest FBI submissions, normalized for population and weighted toward the violent rate. Marco Island leads on a violent crime rate of 0.3 per 1,000, against a Florida state rate of 2.58 and a national rate of 4.43. Every figure is specific, and the verdict on each town is who it actually suits, not a brochure.

The top three are not the towns that simply feel calm; they are the three with the lowest measured crime in the state, where the violent rate sits at or near 0.3 per 1,000 residents.

Marco Island the safest town in Florida

Naples metro · safety index 9.6

Marco Island is the safest place to live in Florida in 2026, and the margin is clear. The barrier island town of 15,387 in Collier county reported a violent crime rate of 0.3 incidents per 1,000 residents, the lowest figure on this list, against a Florida state rate of 2.58 and a national rate of 4.43. Property crime came in at 6.1 per 1,000, low for a coastal town that doubles its population in the winter season. The single causeway onto the island does for Marco what geography does for any peninsula: it keeps the through traffic, and the crime that travels with it, out on the mainland.

Violent / 1k0.3
Property / 1k6.1
Population15,387

The town sits at the southern edge of the Naples metro, one of the wealthiest in the state, and the safety pairs with a household income well above the Florida median. The trade is cost and season: a single family home runs far above the regional average, the hurricane exposure is real on a low barrier island, and the winter influx reshapes the town for five months a year. For the family weighing the move, the safest cities for families ranking sets Marco against the national field, the cost of living calculator prices a month against your current city, and a scouting trip booked through Booking.com covers the first nights before a lease.

Marco is the clearest case of the Florida safety formula: an affluent, low density, geographically bounded community with its own civic identity and a police presence sized to a small population. The safest cities ranking carries the global context behind the Florida leader, and the best cities for retirees ranking the demographic that fills much of the island.

Weston the planned enclave

Miami metro · safety index 9.5

Weston takes second on the strongest safety record of any large suburb in South Florida. The master planned city of 68,107 in western Broward county reported a violent crime rate of 0.4 per 1,000, a remarkable figure for a community of its size inside the Miami metro, against a Broward county rate several times higher. Built from scratch in the 1990s on the edge of the Everglades, Weston was designed on controlled access neighborhoods, a single dominant school feeder pattern, and a contracted Broward Sheriff district that the city funds at a high level.

Violent / 1k0.4
Property / 1k8.2
Population68,107

The scale is what makes the number impressive: holding a violent rate near zero across 68,000 residents is a harder feat than doing it in a town of 15,000. The trade is the standard South Florida one, a high cost of housing and the full hurricane exposure of the Atlantic coast, plus the long commute east into the Miami job market. The Miami versus Tampa comparison weighs the two largest Florida metros for a relocating family, the low crime ranking tracks the national field, and an expat moving an income into dollars holds it at the mid market rate through Wise rather than the bank spread. The Miami profile carries the metro detail behind the enclave.

Parkland the low density north

Miami metro · safety index 9.4

Parkland holds third on a violent crime rate of 0.4 per 1,000 and the lowest property rate of the South Florida top tier at 7.0. The town of 35,805 on the northern edge of Broward county enforces a strict low density code, large lots, no through highways, and a green buffer, that keeps the opportunist crime out on the wider roads beyond the town line. Where a dense suburb invites the burglar, Parkland offers no quick route in and out, and the property numbers reflect it.

Violent / 1k0.4
Property / 1k7.0
Population35,805

Parkland built its identity on the rural feel it has defended against the South Florida sprawl, and the safety is a direct product of that low density. The trade is the same one that runs through the whole top tier: space and safety in exchange for a car dependent life, a price above the metro average, and the Atlantic hurricane exposure. The Miami versus Orlando comparison sets two fast growing Florida metros side by side, the best cities for families ranking covers the wider field, and the relocation score tool grades Parkland against your current address on a 100 point scale. The Miami profile holds the metro context.

Read the table by column rather than by rank to match it to a specific worry. The violent crime column favors the small affluent enclaves of Marco Island, Weston, and Palm Beach, where the rate sits at or below 0.4 per 1,000; the property crime column rewards the bounded coastal town of Marco Island at 6.1; and the population column separates the tiny barrier island communities from the large planned cities of Cape Coral and Port St Lucie, which hold a green score across populations above 200,000. A high property number on a large suburb is not a red flag on its own: Pinecrest at 14.0 per 1,000 still sits below the Florida state property rate of 24.9. Every figure measures the rate against the resident count, so a town of 9,245 and a city of 231,790 compare on equal terms.

The single most useful pattern in the table is the gap between the violent and property rates. Across all 25 towns the violent rate stays under 1.2 per 1,000, a fraction of the state figure, while the property rate ranges more widely from 6.1 to 14.0. That spread tells a relocating family where the real risk sits in a Florida suburb: not in the rare violent incident, which these towns have all but engineered out, but in the property theft that follows the seasonal influx, the tourism, and the retail density. The safest large suburbs are the ones that keep the property rate down despite the size, which is why Miami area Coral Springs and the Gulf coast city of Cape Coral still earn a place in the green band. For the cost behind the safety, the cheapest US cities and highest paying US cities rankings set the trade in context.

The cost of safety in Florida splits into two parts that the table cannot show. The state levies no income tax, which lifts the take home on a salary or a pension relative to a high tax state, a structural gain every town on this list shares. The offset is property insurance, which has risen faster in Florida than anywhere in the nation since 2022, and on a coastal barrier island such as Marco it is the single largest carrying cost after the mortgage. A buyer comparing the inland Orlando suburbs of Oviedo and Winter Springs against the coastal South Florida enclaves is weighing not only the home price but the wind and flood premium that follows the coastline. The tax calculator prices the after tax position against your current state, the cities with no income tax ranking carries the wider field, and the cost converter sets two metros on equal purchasing power terms.

№ 03 , Honorable Mentions

Five safe larger towns.

The five towns below missed the green band only on scale and the seasonal load. Each is a large, fast growing community that still posts a violent crime rate well below the Florida average, the harder feat for a place of its size.

Fort Myers (suburbs)

Naples · safety index 7.8

The Fort Myers suburban ring holds a violent crime rate of 1.4 per 1,000 across a fast growing Southwest Florida population, a strong figure for an area adding residents at one of the highest rates in the state. The scale and the growth, not the safety, keep it in the amber band.

Sanford

Orlando · safety index 7.6

Sanford anchors the safe northern edge of the Orlando metro on Lake Monroe, with a violent rate of 1.6 per 1,000. A retail and transit corridor lifts the property number above the small enclave towns, holding it just below the green band.

Clearwater

Tampa · safety index 7.5

Clearwater pairs a Gulf coast beach economy with a violent rate of 1.7 per 1,000 across 117,000 residents. The tourism density drives the property rate up; the violent rate stays moderate for a city of its size and profile.

Kissimmee

Orlando · safety index 7.2

Kissimmee sits at the tourism heart of the Orlando metro near the theme parks, which keeps the property and transient crime higher than the residential suburbs. The violent rate of 2.0 holds below the state average, but the tourism load defines the town.

Deltona

Orlando · safety index 7.4

Deltona is the largest bedroom community in Volusia county and a strong value option in the Orlando orbit, with a violent rate of 1.8 per 1,000. The lower cost and the longer commute are the trade against the closer in suburbs.

№ 04 , How We Scored

How the safety index works.

The safety index is a composite of four measured inputs, weighted to reward a low violent rate above all else and a record that holds across three years of reporting.

Axis 01

The violent rate

The first and heaviest input is the violent crime rate per 1,000 residents from the latest FBI Uniform Crime Reporting submission. Violent crime carries the most weight because it is the risk a family fears most and the hardest for a town to suppress. Marco Island and Weston lead this axis at 0.3 and 0.4 per 1,000. Read the full weights on the methodology page.

Axis 02

The property rate

The second input is the property crime rate per 1,000, the burglary, theft, and vehicle crime that tracks density, tourism, and the seasonal influx that defines so much of Florida. We weight it below the violent rate but above population, because property crime is the figure a resident actually meets day to day. Marco Island leads this axis at 6.1 per 1,000.

Axis 03

The population test

We normalize every count against the resident population, so a barrier island town of 9,245 and a planned city of 231,790 compare on equal terms, then award a scale bonus to large suburbs that hold a low rate despite size. Coral Springs, Cape Coral, and Port St Lucie earn their green floor here, keeping a violent rate near 1.0 across populations above 100,000.

Axis 04

The trend

The fourth input is consistency: we read three years of FBI submissions and reward the towns whose rates fall or hold rather than spike. A town with a low rate across three reports scores higher than one with a single good year and a volatile record behind it, which matters in a state where the seasonal population swing can move the numbers year to year.

The index refreshes quarterly. The violent and property rates draw on the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting and National Incident Based Reporting submissions for each municipal police department or sheriff district, the population on the Census American Community Survey, and the rankings are cross checked against the SafeWise 2026 Florida analysis. Where a community is policed by a county sheriff district rather than its own department, as several Broward and Collier towns are, we score the town record rather than the county. A suburb that did not submit a complete crime report, or that fell below the population threshold for reliable rates, is excluded rather than estimated.

One limit is worth stating plainly. A crime rate measures reported incidents against residents, not the lived feeling of a street, and two towns with the same score can sit very differently for a given family depending on schools, commute, cost, and the hurricane exposure that no crime statistic captures. We hold the four measured axes as the comparable spine and leave the texture to the local read, which a buyer should confirm against the local sheriff dashboard and the flood maps before a move. For the cost and income that sit alongside the safety, the best cities for jobs and remote work rankings carry the economic read, and a longer relocation is worth covering with SafetyWing until local coverage begins.

№ 05 , The Metro Map

Where the safe suburbs cluster.

The safest Florida suburbs are not spread evenly. Four metros hold 23 of the 25, and knowing which one a town belongs to tells you the commute, the cost, the season, and the hurricane exposure behind the safety.

The South Florida metro, the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach corridor, dominates this ranking with 12 of the 25 towns. The cluster runs from the western Broward enclaves of Weston, Parkland, and Cooper City, built on the edge of the Everglades with controlled access and their own funded sheriff districts, north to the Palm Beach county towns of Wellington, Royal Palm Beach, and Boca Raton. The pattern is consistent: the safest South Florida suburbs are the planned, low density, inland communities west of the coastal cities, not the dense beachfront strip. The Miami versus Tampa and Miami versus Orlando comparisons set the metro against its state rivals.

The Southwest Florida metro, the Naples and Fort Myers coast, holds the next largest share and the overall leader. Marco Island, the city of Naples, Estero, Bonita Springs, and Cape Coral anchor the wealthiest stretch of the Gulf coast, where the affluence and the low density combine to produce the lowest crime rates in the state. The trade is the full hurricane exposure of the southwest coast, which the 2022 storm season made unmistakable, and a winter population swing that doubles many of these towns for five months. The Naples profile carries the cost and season detail.

The Tampa Bay metro contributes a band of safe towns along the Gulf coast and the inland interstate corridor. Venice, Punta Gorda, Sarasota's suburbs, Wesley Chapel, and the master planned Lakewood Ranch pair a lower cost than South Florida with a violent rate near 1.0 per 1,000. Lakewood Ranch in particular has become one of the fastest growing master planned communities in the nation while holding its safety score, the Florida version of the Texas planned suburb model. The Miami versus Tampa comparison weighs the metro for a relocating family.

The Orlando metro holds the safe inland suburban ring. Oviedo, Winter Springs, Sanford, and the larger bedroom communities of Deltona and Kissimmee ring the Seminole and Volusia county edge of the metro, far enough from the tourism core to keep the residential crime low. The trade is the tourism load closer to the theme parks, which lifts the property and transient crime in the towns nearest the attractions. The Orlando profile and the cheapest US cities ranking carry the value case for the inland metro.

Outside the four big metros, the northeast holds the outlier. Palm Coast, between Jacksonville and Daytona, posts a violent rate of 0.9 per 1,000 across nearly 100,000 residents, a strong figure for a fast growing planned community far from the South Florida price. For a remote worker or a retiree who does not need a daily drive into a major metro, the northeast coast delivers the same low crime at a fraction of the Miami or Naples cost. The best cities for retirees ranking and the United States country page set the regional context.

The cost gradient across the metros is as clear as the safety pattern. The Naples coast carries the steepest prices, the product of the wealth that drives its safety, so a buyer pays the most for the lowest crime numbers on the list. The Miami enclaves sit next, high at the Weston and Boca Raton end. The Tampa and Orlando suburbs run cheaper for a comparable safety, with the inland towns holding a green score below the coastal price. The northeast closes the gradient at the bottom, the cheapest safe addresses in the state. The cheapest US cities ranking and the cost of living calculator turn the gradient into a monthly number.

№ 06 , Who Should Move Where

The same list, reordered by need.

A safe suburb means different things to a young family, a retiree, a remote worker, and a buyer on a budget. The same 25 towns reorder depending on what the safety has to sit beside.

For the young family that ranks schools alongside safety, the large planned communities win over the tiny enclaves. Weston and Parkland in the Miami metro pair a green safety score with school districts that rank among the strongest in the state, deep enough that a family is not betting the move on a single campus. Lakewood Ranch and Wesley Chapel do the same on the Tampa side. The trade against the top enclaves is a slightly higher property rate in exchange for a real school district and a deeper housing market. The safest cities for families and best cities for families rankings carry the national field, and the relocation score tool grades each town.

For the retiree who wants quiet and a low tax bill, Florida offers a structural advantage on top of the safety: no state income tax, which lifts the take home on a fixed pension, and a deep retiree infrastructure. Marco Island, Naples, Bonita Springs, and Venice pair the low crime with the no income tax base and a single story housing stock that suits a long retirement. The trade is the insurance, which on a coastal town is the number a retiree must price before the move. The best cities for retirees and retirement rankings carry the wider read, and the tax calculator prices the after tax position.

For the remote worker who has cut the commute loose, the value towns become the play. Palm Coast on the northeast coast, Deltona in the Orlando orbit, and Punta Gorda on the Gulf deliver a low violent rate at a cost the South Florida enclaves cannot match, and the daily drive into a downtown no longer matters. The one number a remote worker has to check is the internet and the hurricane plan, not the crime. The remote work ranking and the NordVPN guide cover the working from home side, and Wise handles any income that arrives in a foreign currency.

For the buyer working to a budget, the list reorders hardest. The cheapest safe suburbs here are the inland Orlando and northeast towns of Deltona, Palm Coast, and the Tampa inland corridor, followed by the Gulf coast value towns, where the same safety costs far less than the Miami and Naples enclaves. At the top end, Marco Island, Weston, Palm Beach, and Boca Raton carry the highest housing and insurance costs on the list, the price of the lowest crime. A buyer should weigh the safety against the carrying cost rather than chase the rank, because the gap between index 9.6 and index 8.0 is small while the cost gap is large. The cheapest US cities ranking and the cost of living calculator price the trade, and a scouting trip through Booking.com covers the first nights.

One closing reorder, for the buyer who weighs the hurricane risk above everything. The inland Orlando suburbs of Oviedo and Winter Springs sit furthest from the storm surge and carry the lowest wind premium of any towns on this list, while the coastal leaders of Marco Island, Naples, and the Gulf barrier towns carry the highest. Neither is wrong; they price different risks. The where should I live quiz weighs the coast against the inland across a dozen questions, and the safest suburbs in Texas and safest suburbs in Georgia rankings set Florida against the wider Sun Belt.
