№ 04 — How We Scored
The methodology, in full.
A transparent walk of the sunshine axes, the data sources, and the editorial decisions behind the 2026 ranking.
The score
Three axes, equal weighted.
The sunniest cities score blends three axes at equal 33 percent weighting: structural annual sunshine hours at the World Meteorological Organization average period 1991 to 2020 reading; structural December average daily sunshine hours (the structural winter solstice reading); and structural June average daily sunshine hours (the structural summer solstice reading). Normalized to a 1 to 10 scale across the global ranked field.
Data sources
WMO, Climatic Research Unit.
The sunshine axis primary source is the World Meteorological Organization climate normals 1991 to 2020 at the global tier 1 metropolitan area readings cross referenced against the local national meteorological agency published 2020 to 2024 trailing five year readings. The structural Climatic Research Unit time series 4.07 plus the structural NASA Surface Meteorology and Solar Energy database deliver the secondary verification.
What we exclude
Active conflict zones.
The sunniest cities ranking excludes structural active conflict zones (defined by the EIU Peace Index 2025 bottom decile) from the top 25 ranking, since the structural sunshine reading at the conflict zone tier (Sanaa, Mogadishu, Tripoli) reads structurally above the global tier 1 baseline but the structural relocator viability runs at the structural absolute floor. The Khartoum sits at the honorable mention tier 3 against the structural 2023 civil war compression. The full methodology walks the binary tests in full.
What we include
Editorial verdict on quality.
Every city in the index is also scored on the everycity 10 point index. The sunniest cities score is the cut of the broader weather and climate axis. The best weather cities ranking reweights across the four seasons; the mild winter cities ranking reweights against the December through February window; the best cities for summer ranking reweights against the June through August window.
