Bali vs Keralathe independent comparison · index 7.6 vs 7.4

Bali and Kerala are the two tropical slow travel bases that sit a tenth apart on the everycity index, 7.6 against 7.4, and they answer different budgets. Kerala is the cheaper, slower, deeply rooted option at 700 dollars a month, the lowest all in figure in this comparison set. Bali is the nomad ecosystem option, 550 dollars more expensive but built for the foreign remote worker in a way the Kerala backwaters are not.

№ 01 , The Verdict

Which city wins.

Two cities, two very different answers, scored on the same methodology.

The Verdict

Bali wins, narrowly.

Bali wins on the nomad ecosystem, the coworking and wellness economy, the remote worker visa, and flight connectivity. Kerala wins decisively on cost, undercutting Bali by 550 dollars a month, and on a human development profile that ranks among the highest in India. For the connected remote worker who wants infrastructure and community, Bali takes it. For the slow traveler optimizing for budget and nature, Kerala is the stronger value.

on the everycity index 2026

A note on method before the numbers. Every cost figure below is priced for May 2026 for a single resident and drawn from the four sources the atlas uses on all 25,000 comparisons: the Numbeo cost of living index, the Mercer cost of living survey, the OECD income database, and World Bank development indicators. The quality of life axes run on the everycity 10 point scale, where a score of 8.0 or higher prints green, 6.0 to 7.9 prints amber, and anything below 6.0 prints red. The verdict that follows is editorial judgment; the figures that support it are not, and the full weighting sits on the methodology page.

Bali scored 7.6 on the everycity index in 2026, Kerala scored 7.4. The 0.2 point gap is narrow and it rests almost entirely on infrastructure and ecosystem rather than livability. Read the Bali city profile and the Kerala city profile side by side and Kerala holds its own on safety, food, and human development while trailing on the remote work scaffolding that Bali has spent a decade building.

The decision rule. If the reader wants the cheapest credible tropical base and values nature, Ayurveda, and a slower rhythm over community size, Kerala is the answer at 700 dollars all in. If the reader wants coworking, a large nomad network, and a visa that permits a year long stay, Bali is the answer. Both sit inside Asia, with Bali in Indonesia and Kerala in India.

For the wider field, the digital nomad ranking places Bali in the global top tier and rates Kerala as an emerging value base. The cheapest cities ranking lists Kerala well ahead of Bali on the resident basket.

Kerala is cheaper on every line. The all in monthly figure is 700 dollars against Bali at 1,250 dollars, a 550 dollar gap that compounds to 6,600 dollars a year, the widest cost spread in this comparison set. A central one bedroom in Kochi runs 250 dollars against Bali at 550 dollars, and dining is half. The single line where the gap narrows is beer, since Kerala applies a heavy alcohol tax that pushes a bar beer to 3 dollars, level with Bali.

Both cities run on foreign income rather than local wages, so Wise handles the inbound transfer. Booking.com covers the scouting trip, and the cost converter tool runs your current rent against both. For the Bali side, the 2026 Bali cost report breaks the basket down by district.

Kerala posts the stronger safety profile by half a point, 7.5 overall against Bali at 7.0, and a notably higher family score at 7.8. Kerala records among the lowest violent crime rates and the highest literacy and health outcomes in India. Bali leads on the solo female day score at 7.2 against Kerala at 7.0, a narrow edge. Both share the same weakness, road safety, where Kerala scores 5.8 and Bali 4.5 given the southern tourist corridor density.

For either base, SafetyWing covers the scooter and road accident risk that dominates the claim data in both. The safest cities ranking rates Kerala in the upper Indian tier and Bali in the mid Southeast Asian tier.

Both cities run tropical monsoon climates with a defined wet season. Bali holds a steadier 88F year round with rain from November to March. Kerala runs slightly cooler highs at 90F but takes the full southwest monsoon from June to September, when daily rain is the norm and the backwaters swell. Kerala carries monsoon flooding risk; Bali carries seismic and volcanic exposure. For the dry season traveler, both deliver, but the calendars are offset by half a year. The climate match tool finds the closest alternatives.

Neither city runs on local salaries for the foreign resident. The Kerala local software engineer earns 9,000 dollars a year and the registered nurse 6,000 dollars, the latter a notable export since Kerala trains nurses for the Gulf and Europe. Bali local wages sit a little higher near 12,000 dollars. The relevant figure for both is the 42,000 to 90,000 dollars a foreign remote worker typically brings, and Kerala stretches that income furthest of any base in this comparison.

The structural difference is the visa. Bali offers the E33G remote worker visa with a year long stay and a foreign income exemption. India offers no nomad visa; Kerala runs on the e tourist visa, which caps the stay and carries no work rights, so longer term residents cycle out and back. The 2026 visa guide covers both routes, and the tax calculator models the foreign income question.

Bali wins the nomad lifestyle axes: the wellness economy, surf, coworking density, and the largest foreign remote community in the region score it 8.8 on culture. Kerala counters with a deeper cultural and culinary tradition, the backwaters, and a genuine Ayurveda economy that scores 8.6 on culture in its own right and 7.8 on food. The clear Kerala weakness is nightlife at 4.5, held down by alcohol restrictions, against Bali at 7.2. Bali also anchors the surf cities ranking, where Kerala does not feature.

Visa difficulty favors Bali at 4 against Kerala at 6, entirely because of the remote worker visa gap described above. Working language is Indonesian in Bali; Kerala runs Malayalam with broad English coverage, which actually eases day to day life for the English speaking visitor more than Bali does. Internet favors Bali only marginally at 30 Mbps against Kerala at 60 Mbps, so on raw connectivity Kerala is the stronger base, a reversal of the usual nomad assumption.

Healthcare is a genuine Kerala strength. The state runs the best public health outcomes in India and a strong private hospital network in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and medical tourism is an established industry. Bali handles routine care and routes serious cases to Singapore. For either base, travel medical cover with evacuation remains standard. Transport is scooter and rickshaw first in both, with Kerala adding a usable Kochi metro that lifts its transit score to 4.0 against Bali at 2.5.

Move logistics are light for both, since the typical resident arrives with luggage rather than a container. The relocation checklist covers the scouting and clinic mapping for each, and the remote work ranking weighs the connectivity and visa trade that separates the two.

№ 08 , The Final Word

The read for each reader.

For the connected remote worker who wants coworking, a large community, strong flight links, and a legal year long stay, Bali wins. The ecosystem and the E33G visa are the deciding factors, and they justify the 550 dollar monthly premium for anyone who relies on either.

For the slow traveler, the budget optimizer, or the household chasing the lowest credible tropical burn with strong healthcare and surprisingly fast internet, Kerala is the stronger value. At 700 dollars all in it is the cheapest base in this comparison set, and its human development profile is the highest in India.
