№ 00 — The Tech Salary Index, 2026

The highest paying tech cities, ranked.

Twenty five global cities scored on median total compensation for the senior software engineer profile, then normalised on tax and rent. The 2026 league table.

San Francisco Bay, USAL4 median total compensation $425,000; $16,500 monthly discretionary; ranked first for the 12th consecutive year

The 2026 tech salary geography sorts into a sharp three tier structure: the San Francisco Bay Area pays a 35 to 65 percent premium over the second tier of Seattle, New York, and Zurich; the second tier pays a 28 to 42 percent premium over the third tier of London, Amsterdam, and Singapore. The everycity.guide editorial team scored 25 cities by gross median total compensation for the senior software engineer profile (5 to 8 years experience, level 4 or equivalent at a major employer), then applied the local effective tax framework and the cost of living index to produce the post tax post rent figure that determines actual purchasing power. The full best cities for tech jobs ranking covers the broader employment density overlay; the tax calculator tool runs the per applicant fit number against the city set.

The methodology takes the May 2026 levels.fyi median total compensation, defined as base salary plus equity vest plus annual bonus, for the L4 software engineer at the largest local employer. The number then runs through the resident tax framework using the standard filing status and zero dependants, and the cost of housing is taken from the Numbeo May 2026 1 bedroom city center rent. The remainder, defined as gross total compensation less tax and less rent, is the discretionary figure for everything else: groceries, transport, insurance, savings, lifestyle. The figure normalises across the cost of living differential and produces a comparable purchasing power number across the 25 city set.

№ 01 — The top three in detail.

1. San Francisco Bay Area, USA

The San Francisco Bay Area, including the Peninsula, the South Bay, and the East Bay employment cluster, holds the top of the 2026 tech salary geography for the 12th consecutive year. The L4 software engineer at Google, Meta, Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Stripe runs at $385,000 to $465,000 in median total compensation, with the AI lab tier (OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Mistral US) running 18 to 32 percent above the FAANG median across the senior individual contributor profile. The federal plus California tax framework applies at a 38.4 percent marginal rate plus the 1.45 percent Medicare and the 9.3 to 13.3 percent California state tax for income above $349,000. The 1 bedroom city center rent in San Francisco runs at $3,420 a month; in Mountain View at $3,180; in Palo Alto at $4,180. After tax and after rent, the L4 in the Bay Area retains $14,800 to $18,200 in monthly discretionary income, which is the global high mark across the tech profile. The full San Francisco profile covers the broader cost overlay.

2. Seattle, USA

Seattle holds the second position on the 2026 tech salary geography on the structural advantage of the absence of state income tax in Washington and the strong principal employer set: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta Reality Labs, Google Kirkland, Stripe, and the AWS senior engineering bench. The L4 software engineer at Amazon runs at $295,000 to $345,000 in median total compensation; at Microsoft at $285,000 to $335,000; at Meta Reality Labs at $345,000 to $395,000. The federal tax applies at a 32 to 35 percent marginal rate; Washington has no state personal income tax. The 1 bedroom city center rent in Seattle runs at $2,180 a month, materially below San Francisco. After tax and after rent, the Seattle L4 retains $13,200 to $15,800 in monthly discretionary income, which calibrates as 89 to 95 percent of the San Francisco equivalent at a substantially lower cost of living. The Seattle profile covers the broader fit profile; the Seattle versus San Francisco comparison covers the head to head.

3. New York City, USA

New York City covers the third position on the 2026 tech salary geography on the strength of the financial technology cluster (Two Sigma, Citadel, Hudson River Trading, Jane Street) and the major platform engineering presence (Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Bloomberg). The L4 software engineer at Google or Meta in New York runs at $340,000 to $410,000 in median total compensation; at Two Sigma or Citadel for the equivalent senior quant developer runs at $480,000 to $720,000 with a much more variable bonus weighting. The federal tax applies at the 35 percent marginal rate, the New York state at 6.85 to 10.9 percent, and the New York City local tax at 3.876 percent on top, which produces the highest combined marginal rate across the US tech metro set. The 1 bedroom Manhattan rent runs at $4,200 a month; in Long Island City at $3,180; in Brooklyn at $3,480 across Williamsburg, Cobble Hill, and Park Slope. After tax and after rent, the New York L4 at a major platform retains $11,900 to $14,200 in monthly discretionary income; at a quant fund the equivalent figure runs $17,400 to $26,800. The New York profile covers the broader fit overlay.

№ 02 — Tiers 4 to 10 the international set.

4. Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich runs the highest absolute median tech salary in continental Europe and ranks fourth on the 2026 global geography. The L4 software engineer at Google Zurich runs at 195,000 Swiss francs ($218,000) in median total compensation; at the Swiss bank engineering bench at UBS or Julius Baer at 175,000 Swiss francs; at the local AI lab cluster including ETH spinouts at 165,000 Swiss francs. The Swiss federal plus Zurich cantonal tax framework runs at an effective 22 to 28 percent for the single filer, materially below the US, UK, or German equivalent. The 1 bedroom city center rent in Zurich runs at 2,580 Swiss francs ($2,890) a month; the rent regulation framework adds friction to the unfurnished search but does not constrain the corporate let. After tax and after rent, the Zurich L4 retains 9,400 to 11,200 Swiss francs ($10,500 to $12,500) in monthly discretionary income. The Zurich profile covers the broader cost overlay.

5. London, United Kingdom

London holds the fifth position on the 2026 tech salary geography and the first position in the UK by a structural margin. The L4 software engineer at Google London runs at GBP 175,000 ($222,000) in median total compensation; at Meta London at GBP 195,000 ($247,000); at the Stripe, Revolut, and Wise senior bench at GBP 145,000 to GBP 175,000. The UK personal allowance and basic, higher, and additional rate framework taxes the salary at an effective 36 to 42 percent; the National Insurance adds 2 percent at the higher band. The 1 bedroom Zone 2 rent in London runs at GBP 2,180 ($2,770) a month across Hackney, Bethnal Green, Walthamstow; in Zone 1 in Shoreditch at GBP 2,680. After tax and after rent, the London L4 at a US major retains GBP 5,800 to GBP 7,200 ($7,400 to $9,200) in monthly discretionary income. The London profile and the London cost of living breakdown cover the broader context.

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam holds the sixth position on the strength of the 30 percent ruling tax preference, which exempts 30 percent of gross salary from Dutch income tax for the qualifying foreign hire across the first 5 years of residency. The L4 software engineer at Booking.com or Adyen Amsterdam runs at 105,000 to 135,000 euros in median total compensation; at the Uber Amsterdam EMEA hub at 125,000 to 165,000 euros. The Dutch tax framework applies at a 36.93 percent first bracket and a 49.5 percent second bracket; the 30 percent ruling drops the effective rate to 26 to 32 percent for the qualifying applicant. The 1 bedroom city center rent in Amsterdam runs at 2,180 euros a month. After tax and after rent on the 30 percent ruling, the Amsterdam L4 retains 4,800 to 6,400 euros in monthly discretionary income. The Amsterdam profile covers the broader fit overlay.

7. Singapore

Singapore holds the seventh position on the structural advantage of the 22 percent top marginal personal income tax (rising to 24 percent for income above 500,000 Singapore dollars) and the absence of capital gains tax. The L4 software engineer at Google Singapore runs at 215,000 Singapore dollars ($160,000) in median total compensation; at Stripe APAC at 195,000 Singapore dollars; at Sea, Grab, or Shopee at 185,000 to 245,000 Singapore dollars across the senior individual contributor band. The 1 bedroom city center rent in Singapore runs at 4,200 Singapore dollars ($3,130) a month, which is the highest in the Asian set; rent has risen 28 percent across 2024 and 2025 on the supply constraint. After tax and after rent, the Singapore L4 retains 8,200 to 11,400 Singapore dollars ($6,100 to $8,500) in monthly discretionary income. The Singapore profile and the Singapore cost of living breakdown cover the broader context.

8. Tel Aviv, Israel

Tel Aviv covers the highest absolute tech salary in the Middle East on the strength of the Wix, Monday, Lightricks, and the strong US scaleup engineering presence (Google, Meta, Apple, Intel, NVIDIA). The L4 software engineer at Google Tel Aviv runs at 95,000 to 125,000 USD in equivalent total compensation; at the Wix or Monday senior bench at 85,000 to 115,000 USD. The Israeli tax framework applies at a 35 to 50 percent marginal rate at the senior salary band, plus the 12.5 percent Bituach Leumi at the higher band. The 1 bedroom city center rent in Tel Aviv runs at 8,400 shekels ($2,260) a month. After tax and after rent, the Tel Aviv L4 retains $4,200 to $5,800 in monthly discretionary income. The Tel Aviv profile covers the broader fit overlay.

№ 04 — The non obvious picks.

Three cities deserve a particular call out for the 2026 working profile. Austin holds the highest discretionary income across the second tier US set on the absence of Texas state income tax, the moderate cost of living, and the strong scaleup employer presence (Tesla, Oracle, Indeed, the major US tech outposts). The L4 in Austin retains 76 percent of the San Francisco discretionary at 67 percent of the cost of living, which produces the strongest value position in the US tech set. The Austin profile and the San Francisco to Austin route guide cover the move analytics. Dubai covers the highest tax efficient discretionary income in the Middle East on the absence of personal income tax: the L4 at the Dubai Internet City scaleup tier or the major US scaleup outpost retains the gross salary minus only the rent, which produces a 60 percent uplift over the equivalent London position on identical gross. The Dubai profile and the Dubai cost of living breakdown cover the broader context. Lisbon holds the strongest emerging tech profile on the 28 percent flat tax for the qualifying applicant under the IFICI (Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation) framework introduced in 2024 to replace the NHR; the L4 at the Bolt, Klarna, or Talkdesk Lisbon outpost runs at 65,000 to 95,000 euros gross with the 28 percent effective rate. The Lisbon profile covers the broader fit.

For the relocating senior engineer the question is rarely the gross compensation alone; the structural variables are the tax framework (the 30 percent ruling in Amsterdam, the IFICI in Portugal, the absence of state tax in Texas and Washington, the absence of personal income tax in the UAE), the cost of housing (the 2026 rent reset has materially compressed the Seattle and Austin advantage versus the prior 5 year baseline), and the equity vest cycle (the high quality scaleup with a 6 to 18 month liquidity timeline materially compresses the otherwise dominant Bay Area position for the medium horizon profile). The best cities for tech jobs ranking covers the per metro overlay; the tax calculator tool runs the per applicant fit number; the relocation score tool generates the per applicant fit number against the 25 city set; the after tax salary comparison guide covers the parallel analysis.

The bottom line

The San Francisco Bay leads at $16,500 monthly discretionary on $425,000 median total compensation. Seattle second at $14,500 on the absence of Washington state tax. New York third at $13,000 on the highest gross at the major platform tier. Zurich fourth on the lowest tax framework in continental Europe. Austin and Dubai cover the value plays at the second and third tier on the structural tax advantage. The 25 city set covers 86 percent of the global tech employment density; the smaller markets that did not make the cut (Stockholm regional, Helsinki, Vienna, Prague, Bucharest, Krakow, Vilnius) cover the long tail at the lower compensation but with structural cost of living advantages.
