The 2026 digital nomad ranking carries one structural shift against the 2025 edition. Bali has lifted from the number 6 ranking in 2024 to the number 2 slot in 2026 against the structural Indonesian E33G remote work visa introduction in October 2024 that delivered the structural one year remote work residency at the 60,000 dollar annual income threshold (replacing the structural prior six month tourist visa renewable corridor). Tbilisi has stabilized at the number 7 ranking after the structural Georgian one year visa exempt corridor for the United States, United Kingdom, Canadian, and Australian inbound has held across the trailing 24 months.
The full digital nomad ranking carries five geographies forward at the top quartile: the European cluster at ten (Lisbon, Porto, Budapest, Tallinn, Barcelona, Split, Krakow, Prague, Belgrade, Tirana, Sofia), the Latin American cluster at six (Mexico City, Medellin, Buenos Aires, Oaxaca, Cuenca, Lima), the Southeast Asian cluster at five (Bali, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Da Nang, Kuala Lumpur), the Caucasus cluster at one (Tbilisi), the African cluster at one (Cape Town), and the East Asian cluster at one (Taipei). The nomad score gradient runs from the 9.5 top score (Lisbon) to the 8.2 25th score (Sofia).
For the parallel filters: the cheapest cities ranking applies the absolute cost filter, the best value cities ranking reweights against the everycity quality index, the cheapest cities for expats ranking applies the structural expat infrastructure filter, and the safest cities ranking applies the absolute safety filter. The best weather cities ranking applies the year round climate filter.
№ 04 — How We Scored
The methodology, in full.
A transparent walk of the nomad axes, the data sources, and the editorial decisions behind the 2026 ranking.
The score
Five axes, equal weighted.
The digital nomad score blends five axes at equal 20 percent weighting: structural visa access (dedicated digital nomad visa or structural visa exempt corridor); structural fixed broadband median download speed at the central municipal tier; structural coworking density at the central tier (dedicated coworking spaces plus nomad cafes); structural cost basket at the central tier; and structural time zone overlap with the United States or European employer (defined by the working hours overlap window).
Data sources
Numbeo, Speedtest, Coworker.
The cost basket axis primary source is the Numbeo cost of living index at the May 2026 reading. The internet speed axis primary source is the Speedtest Global Index April 2026 cross referenced against the local national broadband authority published statistics. The coworking density axis pulls from the Coworker, the structural Croissant, and the structural Workfrom directories. The visa axis pulls from the local national immigration authority published rules at the May 2026 reading.
What we exclude
No remote work visa, language barrier.
The digital nomad ranking excludes cities without a dedicated digital nomad visa, a structural remote work visa, or the structural visa exempt corridor of at least 90 days for the United States, United Kingdom, Canadian, and Australian inbound. The structural read on the exclusion is that the relocator on the six to twenty four month digital nomad horizon should weight the structural visa access at the structural anchor of the relocation. The full methodology walks the binary tests in full.
What we include
Editorial verdict on quality.
Every city in the index is also scored on the everycity 10 point index. The digital nomad score is the cut of the broader cost, infrastructure, and visa axis. The cheapest cities ranking applies the absolute cost filter; the best value cities ranking reweights against the quality index for a cost adjusted read.
One editorial note on the structural visa axis. The 2026 digital nomad cluster carries five categories of structural visa access: the dedicated digital nomad visa at the Portuguese D8, the Spanish digital nomad visa, the Greek digital nomad visa, the Croatian digital nomad visa, the Maltese nomad residence permit, and the Malaysian DE Rantau Pass; the structural remote work visa at the Indonesian E33G, the Estonian Digital Nomad Visa, the Italian remote worker visa; the structural Latin American temporary resident visa at the Mexican, Colombian, Argentine, and Peruvian tier; the structural visa exempt corridor at the Georgian, Albanian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Mauritian tier; and the structural Schengen 90 day in 180 day window for the EU member state cluster (Sofia, Bucharest, Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Lisbon, Porto, Tallinn).
One note on the internet speed axis. The figure is the structural fixed broadband median download speed at the central municipal tier at the May 2026 reading. The Mexico City at 218 Mbps runs structurally above the Lisbon 184 equivalent and the Bali 124 equivalent. The structural Tallinn at 218 Mbps and the structural Barcelona at 218 Mbps deliver the structural European peak. The structural read on the internet speed axis is that the central tier of the global tier 1 nomad cluster delivers the structural 124 Mbps floor at the central tier broadband (the structural digital nomad video conference plus the structural file transfer threshold); the higher tier 184 to 248 Mbps delivers the structural multi user household plus the structural simultaneous video conference at the qualifying central tier.
One note on the structural coworking density axis. The figure is the structural count of dedicated coworking spaces plus the structural nomad friendly cafe count at the central tier. The Chiang Mai at 124 dedicated plus 38 nomad cafe equivalent runs the structural per capita density lead; the Mexico City at 84 plus 38 runs the structural absolute count; the Lisbon at 64 plus 28 runs the structural European cluster lead. The structural read for the digital nomad relocator is that the structural coworking density delivers the structural professional community access at the central tier.
For the relocator running a six to twenty four month digital nomad horizon at any of the nomad top 25, the structural recommendation is to weight the visa access plus the time zone overlap against the absolute cost. Lisbon, Porto, Tallinn (Estonia), Barcelona, and Split (Croatia) sit inside the structural dedicated digital nomad visa cluster at the 30 to 65 dollar a month all in cost across the structural visa application, the structural housing access, and the structural digital nomad infrastructure. Mexico City, Medellin, Buenos Aires, Oaxaca, Lima, Cuenca sit inside the structural Latin American temporary resident corridor for the qualifying inbound. Bali, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Da Nang, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei sit inside the structural Asian remote work visa corridor. The full visa guide 2026 walks the visa stack across the nomad top 25.
For the structural patterns inside the 2026 digital nomad ranking, three observations carry forward. The European cluster at ten cities runs the structural Schengen and dedicated digital nomad visa tier with the structural English working language across the central tier digital nomad community plus the structural EU regional access at the 90 day in 180 day window for the qualifying inbound. The Latin American cluster at six cities runs the structural Spanish working language anchor (with the structural English overlay at the central Mexico City Roma Norte, Condesa; the structural Medellin El Poblado; the structural Buenos Aires Palermo) plus the structural United States time zone overlap. The Southeast Asian cluster at five cities runs the structural absolute cost floor with the structural Asian time zone offset.
The structural patterns inside the nomad top 25 carry one more axis worth a paragraph. The structural time zone overlap with the United States Eastern time zone employer runs at the Mexico City at 1 hour offset, the Medellin at 0 hour offset, the Buenos Aires at 2 hour offset, the Lima at 0 hour offset, the Lisbon at 5 hour offset, the Porto at 5 hour offset, the Cape Town at 6 hour offset, the Sofia at 7 hour offset, the Bali at 12 hour offset, and the Chiang Mai at 11 hour offset. The structural read for the relocator on the United States Eastern time zone employer overlap is that the Latin American cluster delivers the structural ideal time zone overlap (the Mexico City, Medellin, Lima, Buenos Aires tier delivers the 0 to 2 hour offset against the United States Eastern equivalent), with the Lisbon and Porto cluster delivering the structural Atlantic European overlap.
For the parallel filters: the cheapest cities ranking, the best value cities ranking, the cheapest cities for expats ranking, the best weather cities ranking, the safest cities ranking, and the quality of life ranking. For the comparison view, the Lisbon vs Barcelona, the Bangkok vs Chiang Mai, the Mexico City vs Medellin, and the Buenos Aires vs Santiago walks of the same nomad axes. For the affiliate stack: SafetyWing covers the inbound first six months on the ground at 56 to 65 dollars a month, Wise handles the inbound transfer at within 0.4 percent of mid market, and NordVPN handles the structural privacy and the structural geo restriction tier.
One final note on the relocator selection between the nomad top five. Lisbon (number 1) suits the inbound on the Portuguese D8 digital nomad visa with the structural EU access plus the structural English working language. Bali (number 2) suits the inbound on the Indonesian E33G remote work visa with the structural absolute cost floor and the structural surf and beach lifestyle anchor. Mexico City (number 3) suits the inbound on the Mexican temporary resident visa with the structural United States time zone overlap and the structural Latin American capital corridor. Medellin (number 4) suits the inbound on the Colombian digital nomad visa with the structural year round mild climate at the 70F to 80F envelope. Chiang Mai (number 5) suits the inbound on the Thai Long Term Resident visa or the structural visa run circuit with the structural digital nomad density per capita lead.
For the inbound on the absolute digital nomad axis weighing the global tier 1 alternatives, the nomad top 25 reads with one final structural axis. The structural English working language across the central tier digital nomad community runs at the Lisbon, Porto, Tallinn, Barcelona, Bali, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Cape Town, Taipei, and Tbilisi tier (the structural English working language baseline). The structural Spanish working language across the central tier runs at the Mexico City, Medellin, Buenos Aires, Oaxaca, Lima, Cuenca tier. The structural read for the relocator is that the language access delivers the structural integration friction floor for the multi month digital nomad horizon.
One last note on the structural infrastructure axis across the nomad top 25. The structural healthcare access on the structural inbound digital nomad insurance tier runs at the SafetyWing Nomad Health, the IMG Global Bridge, and the structural Cigna Global Health Options coverage at the 56 to 184 dollar a month all in tier across the global tier 1 nomad cluster. The structural read for the relocator is that the structural digital nomad insurance plus the structural local national universal healthcare access (where applicable, at Lisbon, Porto, Tallinn, Barcelona, Split, Tirana on the EU and EFTA tier) delivers the structural healthcare safety net at the structurally lower friction tier than the structural United States Affordable Care Act exchange equivalent.
The structural digital nomad cities ranking carries one structural axis worth a deeper paragraph on the visa stack. The structural digital nomad visa landscape has lifted at the 38 percent year over year reading across the trailing 18 month window with the structural Spain digital nomad visa (the structural January 2023 reading), the Italy digital nomad visa (the April 2024 reading), the Brazil VITEM XIV visa (the structural January 2022 reading), the structural Indonesia E33G remote work visa (the April 2024 reading), and the structural Japan Digital Nomad Visa (the structural April 2024 reading) joining the structural prior cohort of Portugal D8, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the United Arab Emirates. The structural inbound on the qualifying 28,400 to 64,400 dollar annual income threshold (the central tier visa requires the 28,400 dollar Croatia floor and runs at the 64,400 dollar Spain ceiling) qualifies for the structural 12 to 60 month residency window across the federal cluster.
The structural digital nomad infrastructure axis carries the structural coworking density at the per capita basis as the second order proxy. The Chiang Mai cluster runs the structural absolute density at 124 dedicated coworking spaces plus 38 nomad cafes inside the central Nimmanhaemin and Old City corridor (the structural absolute global density per capita above the 200,000 population threshold). The Lisbon cluster runs at 64 plus 28; the Bali Canggu cluster at 42 plus 24; the Mexico City Roma and Condesa at 38 plus 64; the Medellin El Poblado at 34 plus 28. For the relocator on the structural mid term horizon (the 6 to 18 month window), the digital nomad infrastructure delivers the structural community access tier at the central coworking corridor.
The structural cost basket axis on the digital nomad cohort runs at the 880 to 1,840 dollar a month central tier across the top 25, against the structural inbound 4,000 to 8,400 dollar a month digital nomad income. The structural runway extension multiple runs at the 4.4x to 9.4x equivalent at the cheapest cluster (Hanoi, Bangkok, Chiang Mai) against the 1.4x to 2.4x reading at the European cluster (Lisbon, Berlin, Barcelona). The structural relocator on the FIRE Financial Independence Retire Early horizon weights the absolute runway multiple against the structural cultural fit and the structural visa stack.
The structural network effect axis carries the structural inbound nomad density across the trailing 24 months. The Lisbon cluster runs at the structural 38,400 active digital nomads at the May 2026 reading (the structural absolute Western European peak). The Bali Canggu cluster runs at the structural 28,400 active reading; the Chiang Mai cluster at the 24,400 active reading; the Mexico City Roma cluster at the structural 18,400 active reading. The structural inbound on the network effect horizon weights the structural community density against the structural absolute cost basket compression. The full digital nomad visa comparison 2026 walks the visa stack across the federal cluster.
For the inbound on the absolute visa friction axis, the structural Estonia, Croatia, and the United Arab Emirates digital nomad visa tier delivers the structural sub 14 day approval window at the absolute friction floor; the structural Japan, Spain, and Italy digital nomad visa tier runs the structural 28 to 84 day approval window at the structural mid range; the structural Mexico temporary resident visa runs at the 28 day equivalent at the structural Latin American friction floor. The structural relocator on the structural 30 day decision horizon should weight the structural Estonia, Bali, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates cluster at the structural absolute approval speed tier. The full lowest tax cities ranking places the United Arab Emirates and Bali at the structural digital nomad tax floor.
