Singapore vs Vancouverthe independent comparison · index 8.5 vs 8.0

Singapore taxes a 100,000 dollar income at 9 percent and posts the lowest crime rate of any large city on earth; Vancouver taxes the same income at 30 percent and answers with mountains, ocean, and a clear path to citizenship. Singapore is the efficient, hot, expensive Asian hub; Vancouver is the rainy, temperate, family friendly gateway to Canada. The choice is a low tax career engine against an outdoor life with a passport at the end of it.

№ 01 , The Verdict

Which city wins.

A low tax Asian hub against a temperate Canadian gateway. The index resolves the headline; the passport question resolves the long game.

The Verdict

Singapore wins on tax, safety, and jobs.

Singapore wins on the effective tax rate, the safety record, the jobs hub status, the transit, and the food, which carries the index. Vancouver wins on nature, the milder cost of housing, the temperate climate, and a route to permanent residence and citizenship that Singapore does not offer.

Singapore
on the everycity index 2026

Singapore scored 8.5 on the everycity index in 2026, Vancouver scored 8.0. The 0.5 point gap rests on tax, safety, and the strength of Singapore as a regional headquarters magnet. For the long read on each, see the Singapore city profile and the Vancouver city profile.

The decision rule: if the work is finance, technology, or trade across Asia and the household optimizes for take home pay and personal safety, Singapore is the math, because the effective tax can run a third of the Canadian rate and the city is the regional base for most multinationals. If the household weights nature, a four season climate, space, and eventual Canadian citizenship for the family, Vancouver is the math, because Singapore permanent residence is hard to obtain and harder to convert to citizenship.

The two cities anchor different continents and different life models. Singapore leads the lowest tax cities ranking and the safest cities ranking globally; Vancouver leads the quality of life ranking in North America on the strength of its setting. For the national frames see Singapore and Canada. The wider reads run through Dubai versus Singapore and Toronto versus Vancouver.

The split is structural and reveals each city’s character. Vancouver is cheaper on housing, transit, utilities, and the car by a wide margin, while Singapore is cheaper on the things that come from density and policy: groceries, gigabit internet at 35 dollars, and above all food, where a hawker centre meal runs 5 dollars against 16 for a casual Vancouver lunch. The single largest divergence is the car: Singapore prices a vehicle through the Certificate of Entitlement system at 2,200 dollars a month all in, the most expensive car ownership on earth, while Vancouver runs 600. Net the no car monthly all in and Vancouver lands at 3,100 dollars against 3,600 in Singapore.

For moving funds across the Singapore dollar to Canadian dollar line, Wise converts at within 0.5 percent of the mid market rate. The cost converter tool runs the purchasing power adjustment, and the result favors the saver in Singapore once the low tax is layered on top of the cost, despite the higher rent. The cost of living calculator compares both directly.

Both rank as expensive globally. Singapore sits near the top of the most expensive cities ranking on housing and cars; Vancouver is the priciest city in Canada and one of the least affordable relative to local wages. For the cheaper regional alternatives, see Kuala Lumpur versus Singapore and Calgary versus Vancouver, and the profiles for Kuala Lumpur and Calgary.

Singapore wins safety on all five axes. Singapore scores 9.2 overall against Vancouver at 7.6, and the gap is widest after dark and on petty crime. Singapore posts one of the lowest crime rates of any city on earth, a function of strict law enforcement and dense, well lit public space; a solo walk home at 3 in the morning is unremarkable. Vancouver is safe by global standards but carries visible street disorder and a property crime problem in the Downtown Eastside and parts of the core, driven by an opioid crisis that the city has struggled to contain. The safest cities ranking places Singapore at number 1 globally.

For the new arrival, SafetyWing covers the first months in either city at 45 to 56 dollars a month for the single under 40, a bridge until the employer or provincial cover registers. The safest cities for families ranking places Singapore at number 2 globally and Vancouver inside the top 40. Singapore also leads the safest cities for women ranking.

Singapore is hot and humid every day of the year, with a high near 88F, no winter, and 84 percent humidity that newcomers feel as a wall. Vancouver runs temperate, a 72F July high and a 35F January low, with four seasons and the famous grey rain that delivers 168 wet days a year, statistically a touch more than Singapore’s tropical 167. The trade is the constant tropical heat of Singapore against the long, dark, drizzly Vancouver winter from November to March. The climate match tool finds cities with either profile.

Vancouver answers its grey winter with ski mountains 30 minutes from downtown and a summer that locals call the best on the continent. Singapore answers its heat with universal air conditioning and a year round outdoor calendar that never pauses for cold. The best weather ranking places neither in the top 50, for opposite reasons. For warm and dry, the sunniest cities ranking points elsewhere.

Singapore pays comparably on technology, more on finance, and taxes all of it far less. The headline is the effective rate: a 100,000 dollar income keeps 91 percent in Singapore against 70 percent in Vancouver, a 21 point swing that compounds into a fortune over a career. Singapore is the Asian regional headquarters for most global banks and a growing technology base, with Google, Meta, and the trading houses anchored there. Vancouver carries large engineering offices for Amazon, Microsoft, and a deep film and gaming sector, but salaries trail the United States and the tax is among the highest in North America. The cities for finance ranking places Singapore at number 3 globally.

Tax is the decisive Singapore advantage. The top marginal band sits at 24 percent against the 53.5 percent British Columbia combined rate, there is no capital gains tax, and the effective burden on a six figure salary is near a third of Vancouver’s. The tax calculator tool runs the take home in either jurisdiction, and the highest paying after tax ranking reflects the Singapore edge. The counterweight is the immigration path, covered in the practical section. The wider read runs through Hong Kong versus Singapore and Seattle versus Vancouver.

Singapore wins food, nightlife, walkability, and transit; Vancouver wins nature by the widest margin on the board, 9.6 against 6.0. Singapore food is a national religion, from the Michelin starred hawker stalls to the cuisines of the Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Peranakan communities, and it tops the foodies ranking in Asia. Transit is the cleanest comparison: the Singapore MRT runs fast, cheap, and immaculate, 9.4 against Vancouver SkyTrain at 8.2, itself one of the better systems in North America.

Vancouver answers with the setting no Asian hub can match: skiing on Grouse and Cypress in winter, kayaking and hiking in summer, and the ocean and the Coast Mountains framing the city from every angle. It anchors the cities near mountains ranking and the cycling ranking in North America. For tours, GetYourGuide covers the Whistler corridor and the Southeast Asian island routes respectively. The most walkable cities ranking rates both inside the global top 30.

The immigration path is the heart of the matter and it favors Vancouver. Canada runs the Express Entry points system, a transparent route that takes a skilled worker from arrival to permanent residence in one to two years and to citizenship in four more. Singapore issues the Employment Pass readily to qualified professionals, but converting that to permanent residence is discretionary and increasingly selective, and Singapore citizenship requires renouncing the original passport. For the household that wants a permanent home and a second citizenship, Vancouver is the clearer bet. The 2026 visa guide walks both, and the nomad visa cities ranking notes neither runs a dedicated nomad route.

Language is a non issue: both cities operate in English as the working and daily language, which makes either an easy landing for the Anglophone professional. Singapore adds Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil as official languages, but English is the lingua franca of work and administration.

On the margins, Singapore broadband leads at 300 Mbps against 230, both airports sit under half an hour out by rail, and healthcare diverges by model: Singapore runs a co payment system with mandatory medical savings that is efficient but not free, while British Columbia runs the public Medical Services Plan free at the point of use after a short waiting period. The best healthcare ranking rates both inside the global top 20. The SafetyWing bridge covers the gap before either system registers.

№ 08 , The Final Word

The read for each reader.

For the finance or technology professional who optimizes for take home pay, personal safety, and a base from which to work across Asia, Singapore wins, and the low tax compounds into a decisive long term advantage. Accept the heat, budget the rent and the cost of a car, and the money goes further than almost anywhere.

For the family that weights nature, a temperate four season climate, space, and a clear path to permanent residence and Canadian citizenship, Vancouver wins. The salary is lower and the tax is high, but the setting and the passport at the end of the road are the payoff.
