№ 00 — The Comfortable Budget Index, 2026

How much you need to live comfortably, 30 cities.

The 2026 monthly comfortable budget for a single resident in a 1 bedroom city center apartment with moderate dining and full health cover. The audit, ranked.

Bangkok, ThailandComfortable budget $1,650 a month; rent $620, dining $14 a meal; ranked first across the 30 city set

The comfortable monthly budget is a structural variable, not an aspirational one. The everycity.guide editorial team scored 30 global cities on the budget required to live comfortably as a single person in a 1 bedroom city center apartment, with a moderate restaurant frequency (3 dinners and 8 lunches a month outside the home), monthly transit pass, basic gym membership, fitness classes twice a week, weekly groceries at the local supermarket plus one farmer's market visit, monthly utilities and internet, monthly phone plan, monthly health insurance for the foreign resident, and a 15 percent margin for savings, hobbies, and the unexpected. The number is calibrated to May 2026 prices and reflects the post 2024 to 2025 rent reset across the major hubs.

The comfortable budget excludes flights, vacation, household setup costs, and any income tax that the resident pays at the source. The methodology uses Numbeo's May 2026 city center rent and grocery basket, the Mercer Cost of Living component for restaurant and transport, and the Expatistan benchmarks for the international school and family overlay where applicable. The full cheapest cities to live ranking covers the bottom of the cost spectrum; the most expensive cities ranking covers the top; the cost of living calculator runs the per applicant fit number against the city set.

№ 04 — What comfortable means in 2026.

The comfortable budget across the 30 city set runs from $1,650 a month in Bangkok to $6,420 a month in New York, a ratio of 3.9 to 1. The two principal drivers of the differential are the rent (rents range from $620 in Bangkok to $4,200 in Manhattan, a ratio of 6.8 to 1) and the cost of moderate restaurant dining (from $8 a meal in Bangkok to $35 a meal in central New York, a ratio of 4.4 to 1). The other line items (groceries, transit, gym) cluster within a 2.5 to 1 ratio across the set, which is the structural reason that the rent component dominates the comfortable budget. The cities at the bottom of the table (the four below $2,200) all combine the structurally low rent with the structurally low restaurant cost, plus the structurally low private health insurance premium given the public system or the lower per claim cost.

The cities at the top of the table (the five above $5,000) all combine the structurally high rent with the structurally high private insurance premium and, in the case of New York and San Francisco, the structurally higher grocery and dining cost. The middle of the table (the 15 cities between $2,500 and $4,500) is the most structurally interesting set: the choice between Madrid at $2,420 and Paris at $3,520, between Berlin at $2,820 and Amsterdam at $3,820, between Lisbon at $2,180 and Barcelona at $2,920 captures the actual decision frame for the relocating European working professional. The full Lisbon profile, the Dubai profile, and the Singapore profile cover the principal expat destinations; the cheapest cities to live ranking covers the broader bottom of the cost spectrum; the cost of living vs salary by city covers the salary normalised view; the highest paying tech cities covers the gross salary lens; the after tax salary comparison covers the post tax post rent view; the cost of living calculator generates the per applicant fit number against the 30 city set. The Wise multi currency account covers the multi balance management; the SafetyWing remote health insurance covers the cross border health for the foreign resident not yet in the local public system.

The bottom line

The 2026 comfortable budget for the single foreign resident in a 1 bedroom city center apartment ranges from $1,650 a month in Bangkok to $6,420 a month in New York. Bangkok, Mexico City, Athens, Lisbon, Seoul, and Madrid cover the value end at $1,650 to $2,420. Berlin, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona cover the next layer at $2,500 to $3,000. Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney, and Toronto cluster in the $3,500 to $4,500 band. Zurich, Singapore, Hong Kong, New York, and San Francisco run above $5,000. The comfortable budget is a structural variable not an aspirational one; the rent component dominates.
